You are cordially invited to the BSMA's "Night with a Nerd" quarterly series!

The 1-ton Curiosity rover has been exploring the Red Planet since its landing in 2012. First finding evidence for long-lasting lakes and rivers on our sister planet, Curiosity has been learning more about organic materials and about the transition from a warmer and wetter climate to one that is now cold and dry. The ChemCam laser instrument, has returned more than half a million spectra along the rover’s 12-mile traverse, ascending over 1000 feet on Mt. Sharp. The talk will cover Los Alamos’ involvement in NASA’s next rover, including the power supply and instruments SuperCam and SHERLOC. The new rover, planned for launch in 2 years, will also collect samples for future return to Earth, demonstrate the generation of oxygen for future astronauts, and deploy a drone.About the Speaker: Dr. Roger Wiens is the leader for the ChemCam and SuperCam laser instruments. He is a Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory and has been knighted by the French government for forging scientific ties and “inspiring many young, ambitious Earthlings.” He is author of the book, Red Rover: Inside the Story of Robotic Space Exploration (Basic Books, 2013).

The lecture will be followed by networking and refreshments.
